1/2 credit - 1 period per day, 5 days a week – Semester Course

The focus is on the application of scientific concepts through traditional classroom instruction, case studies, virtual forensic laboratories, laboratory demonstrations and selected laboratory experiments that can be safely accomplished within a class period.  The course is designed to provide the student with basic knowledge in the following forensic content: Introduction to Forensic Science, Physical Evidence, Glass and Soil, Fingerprints, Hair and Fiber, DNA and Typing.


SHU Course Description
This course introduces the broad range of forensic services offered by crime labs. The student gains an
understanding of the scientific basis of forensic services through a general study of biology, chemistry,
physics, and statistics. Topics include processing a crime scene, trace and contact evidence, identification
of body fluids, DNA analysis, drugs of abuse, bloodstain patterns, fingerprints, and firearms. The student
performs selected forensic techniques in the laboratory. Satisfies the Science requirement of the Liberal
Arts Curriculum. 3 credits.
